Nearly 215,000 Ford F-150, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles are being recalled after several crashes due to brake failures.
The recall includes 2016–2017 Ford Expedition, 2016–2017 Lincoln Navigator and 2016–2018 Ford F-150 vehicles equipped with 3.5L EcoBoost engines. According to the Ford recall, the brake master cylinder may allow brake fluid to leak from the brake master cylinder front wheel circuit and into the brake booster.
Depleted brake fluid levels could cause a change in brake pedal and reduce brake performance. Typically, a driver will hear a chime and see a warning light and message if the brake fluid goes too low.
Ford has issued two prior recalls for the same master cylinder problem. The first recall, issued in May 2016 after nine reported crashes, included 2013–2014 Ford F-150 trucks with 3.5-liter engines.
The second recall, issued in June 2020, included about 344,000 model year 2014–2017 Ford F-150 trucks with 3.5-liter EcoBoost engines.
Ford said it was aware of seven crashes and two injuries related to brake problems.
After the recalls, Ford monitored the Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators, becoming aware of four crashes by March 4.
Recall notices are expected to be mailed April 25, after which Ford dealers will replace the master cylinders and, if needed, the brake boosters.
